Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum Hosts the 9th Annual Broncho Billy Silent Film Festival
The Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum is proud to announce the 9th Annual Broncho Billy Silent Film Festival, Friday, June 23rd through Sunday, June 25th, 2006 at the Niles Edison Theater, 37417 Niles Boulevard, Fremont, CA.
Among the highlights of the film festival will be a presentation of the Hubbard Award, a showing of a Ray Hubbard documentary – The Bridge Builders, and special guests lectures on topics such as film restoration, growing up with the movies, stunts and special effects with film showings of comedy, drama and western film greats such as Charlie Chaplin, Ben Turpin, Harold Lloyd, William S. Hart and John Barrymore, with live piano accompaniment.
Friday evening at 6:30 PM, a social hour kicks off the film festival followed at 7:30 with the Hubbard Award presentation to Chris Snowden and David Shepard for their contributions to silent film history. In honor of Ray Hubbard himself there will be a showing of his documentary, The Bridge Builders, telling the story of the creation of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges, followed by two films made in Niles by the Essanay Film Company, courtesy of the Netherlands Film Museum with live piano accompaniment by Bruce Loeb. Topping off the evening, David Shepard will talk about his Chaplin film restorations and a showing of Easy Street (1917) and The Rink (1916), by Mutual Films Co.
On Saturday morning at 10 AM, Richard Roberts will present a program of Ben Turpin films and his contemporaries in comedy. Ben was a Niles favorite when he worked here with the Essanay Film Company in 1915. Here is a chance to see what made Ben great, with musical accompaniment by Frederick Hodges.
Saturday at 1:00 PM, a showing of Tumbleweeds (music by Molly Axtmann) will introduce a discussion of stunts and special effects in westerns. The panel moderated by Larry Telles will include Diana Serra Cary, Bob Birchard and Sprague Anderson. At 3:30 PM on Saturday, Chris Snowden will introduce a program entitled "Flaming Youth of the Roaring Twenties". See Clara Bow, Carole Lombard and more, with Frederick Hodges at the piano.
Saturday at 7:15 PM, Annette Lloyd, the author of The Harold Lloyd Encyclopedia, will host a program of Harold Lloyd short subjects with Judy Rosenberg at the piano. We are proud to offer a rare chance to see Lloyd in some of his outstanding work before taking up feature films. The final show on Saturday begins at 9:15 PM with Valley of the Giants (1927), a powerful feature film made in northern California starring Milton Sills and Doris Kenyon and an outstanding score by Phil Carli at the piano.
On Sunday at 11 AM, Sally Dumaux, author of King Baggot, will present Human Hearts (1922), directed by King Baggot. Phil Carli will play the piano once again. At 2:30 PM, step back in time to get an impression of what it was like "Growing Up with the Movies" in the 1910s and 20s. Les Thomsen remembers, and he will discuss it with David Kiehn on the Edison Theater stage. At 4 PM, the festival will finish up for the year with Beloved Rogue (1927), starring John Barrymore, featuring a special score by Jon Mirsalis. Don't miss it!
